China Baidu launch Chinese Discovery Channel

Baidu plus discovery media
July 28, 2009 Baidu Inc., which runs China’s leading search engine, and the Discovery Channel launched a Web site Tuesday to carry nature and science features, adding to rivalry in China’s competitive Internet market.

The site — discovery.baidu.com — will raise the Discovery Channel’s profile in China, which restricts foreign access to its vast television audience. It will give Baidu a new asset as it competes with U.S.-based search giant Google.

Baidu's marketing director Mr.Zhu  told the media that Baidu will integrate all its knowledge and information related products such as ZhiDao, TieBa etc. with Discovery Chinese channel to make the information more accessible to the users.

In effective China Online Marketing, Baidu built this discovery channel to expand its share in online video markets. However, Baidu should focus more on its search technologies and its B2C platform - Baidu Youa.

Jia JunPeng - typical China online marketing case study

A recent string of online posts about a young person whose mother was looking for him has quickly gained popularity among netizens who consider it a Chinese internet phenomenon.

The post with the title "Jia Junpeng, your mother is calling you home for dinner" appeared on the Chinese portal Baidu.com at 10:59 a.m. last Thursday. The thread content consists of only 2 letters, namely RT which simply means "as the title suggests."

Amazingly, after only six hours, it attracted more than 400,000 viewers and 17,000 replies, most of which were posted by young people. Some who posted replies pretended to be Jia's relatives, teachers or friends. They doctored photos and started cyberhunts, posting several thousands of replies per second.

A month later, the story turns out to be a result of a great marketing plan. There is no real "Jia junpeng", the post was initially posted and buzzed by those Internet agents who work part-time just posting articles to various forums (spammers in some sense). But after a short time, a real buzz is generated and the initial team didn't need to keep the post up anymore......

As you may noticed, there is nothing exciting in the copy, however, it grabbed the lonely feeling in many people's heart and gave them memories from their childhoods. Sometimes, a successful marketing plan is just a simple sentence...
